Recognizing the Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

by Take Care on January 11, 2010

High blood pressure is getting more and more attention these days, and deservedly so. Most people already know that blood pressure is measured quite easily and belongs within an established range. If it is outside the range on the high side, grave consequences can result. High blood pressure can lead to death and is in fact a leading cause of death. In the early stages, the symptoms of high blood pressure are sometimes obvious but mostly they are not. It is easy to overlook them as they are often confused with symptoms of far less serious disorders. That is why it is so important to learn how to detect the symptoms of high blood pressure and differentiate them from the less serious ones.

Ambiguous High Blood Pressure Symptoms

Common non-specific symptoms of high blood pressure include aching or throbbing in the head or nape of the neck areas. Many causes other than high blood pressure are associated with both of these types of aches. While little evidence exists to prove these symptoms are directly caused by blood pressure, there is a very high correlation between those feeling these symptoms and those with measured high blood pressure. A dizzy feeling, and sometimes nausea, are also possible signs of high blood pressure but may equally be caused by other, more minor, problems.

Impaired vision is another ambiguous sign that may or may not mean high blood pressure. Heat prostration, for example, may be the cause and not high blood pressure. However, since heat prostration is also serious, most people with this symptom will see a doctor right away, unlike with the milder symptoms such as headaches or dizziness. Blurred vision, whether or not related to high blood pressure, is a possible signal of a stroke so it is important to deal with it immediately.

Managing You Blood Pressure Level

Abnormally high blood pressure is not curable in the usual sense. However, it is manageable through a variety of methods. Doctors are well aware of a wide variety of medications designed to control high blood pressure. They work in many different ways and some may be suitable for you while others may not be. It is important that you keep in touch with your doctor and advise him of any side affects that may occur.
