The Importance of a Food Allergy Test

by Take Care on January 21, 2010

You have probably noticed that you often feel bad after meals. You may even know what foods tend to make you feel bad. But you may not know what the cause of your digestive problems is. Treatment can’t begin until you isolate the cause. An important step to treatment is to do a food allergy test.

Doing Your Own Food Allergy Test

It doesn’t take a lot of money or effort to test for food allergies, whether you go to a doctor or take the time to do it yourself. You basically just have to set aside time to document what you eat and experiment with what you eat. You also need to document how you are feeling throughout each day.

Even under the care of a doctor, a food allergy test is not usually performed in the same manner as an airborne allergy test. You will usually do most of the work yourself, reporting back to the doctor on your findings and getting further instruction from your doctor about how to do the test.

You will be directed to eat only certain food groupings at certain times to help eliminate allergens on a more general scale. When you react to something, you will then fine tune your eating experimentation to isolate specific foods. In most cases, you will work from the most common allergens, such as dairy and nuts, down to the less common ones.

What to Do with Food Allergy Test Results

Avoidance is currently the best medical advice you can get for food allergies. Not only can they make you miserable on the outside, but there is increasing evidence to the deadliness of the long-term inflammatory processes they can cause inside your body. It may be hard to cut out some of the foods you really like, but there are plenty of alternatives on the market today. Further, the vitality that comes with health far outweighs the temporal enjoyment of a few foods you like.

You will learn to enjoy other foods. However, you shouldn’t expect this to happen within weeks or even months. It can take years to learn to like new foods but it will happen; you just have to experiment with healthier foods until you find those that suit you. More importantly, you need to stick with those foods that came back negative from your food allergy tests in order to fully enjoy the other aspects of your life.
